Hi! I am the conservative, pro-public safety candidate running for a seat on the Charlotte City Council in District 2 in the July 26, 2022, election. I have lived in District 2 for over 15 years and I’m running because I feel all citizens are worthy of having visible representation and a voice that will lift all up, not just special interests.
A resident of Charlotte since early childhood, Mary Lineberger Barnett is a graduate of CMS, where she was active in student government. Mary received her BS in Biology from Meredith College, after which she taught high school science in Raleigh, NC.
Eventually returning to Charlotte, she home schooled her five children, and, together with her husband Douglas, successfully owned and operated small businesses for many years.
Mary attends Freedom House Church and in her spare time enjoys horseback riding with her favorite horse Ace.
“I grew up right here and even attended Bruns Elementary School just off Five Points Plaza in District 2,” says Mary. "I absolutely love living in Charlotte because I believe in the American dream and I believe our city is the "welcome mat" to everything that is beautiful about the southeastern part of our nation."
I have lived here in District 2 for over fifteen years with my husband and my children. We are devout Christians and we really enjoy the green ways, parks, events, restaurants, specialty shops, and the great people of Charlotte.
The motivating factors for driving me to run for Charlotte City Council from District 2 include the deepening dependency that our city government is driving citizens to exist upon. And the broadening voice of our City Council to focus on the politics of outcomes, not the quality of outcomes.
“The volume is so loud today on special interests that the silent majority remains silent. And I want to include all voices as your representative.”
District 2 serves the citizens in northwest Charlotte with 19 voting precincts. District 2 includes citizens who live in areas around Mountain Island, Harwood Lane, Coulwood, Westchester, Wesley Heights, Johnson C Smith University, Five Points Plaza, Uptown Charlotte northwest of South Tryon Street, University Park, Oakview Terrace, Lincoln Heights, Beatties Ford, West Sugar Creek and Hemphill Heights. District 2 is a large and extremely important district to the City of Charlotte.
I bring my skills as a successful entrepreneur and business owner in Charlotte to keep our neighborhoods safe and to keep city government free from corruption.
As we all see every day in Charlotte, crime and deadly violence is on the rise. Public safety is our city government’s first responsibility. If we are not safe in our homes, communities and businesses, nothing else that our local government does will matter. And I will fight to keep our CATS bus drivers and Charlotte City Employees safe on the job. Watch this video on our CATS Bus Driver Safety News Conference from March 2022.
My goal as your representative from District 2 on Charlotte City Council is to bring together both the emotional and structural opinions to build the quality of outcomes.
“I am for investments into more Vocational and Trade Schools with more opportunities for our citizens to learn valuable trades to create higher living wages for their families,” says Mary.
I will collaborate and work with all city council members and our mayor in establishing city operating policies, appointing city officials and various board members and commissions, reviewing and scrutinizing the city’s annual budgets, setting tax rates and approving the financing of all city operations.
“I am a conservative and collaborative individual that will give all citizens of District 2 a committed voice on Charlotte City Council,” said Mary.
As part of The Slate Republican Candidates running for office in Charlotte, I support BackUp For The Front Lines as a phenomenal program and partnership that connects first responder families to emergency contacts and other supports.
